What is steerStory?
steerStory is an Android app from leaststress.com that lets you read and listen in one place. It turns your personal EPUB and PDF files into offline audiobooks using installed device text-to-speech voices, with live spoken-word highlighting so listening and reading stay in sync.
Does steerStory really work offline?
Yes — completely. Once the app and your books are on your phone, reading, narration, word highlight, bookmarks, progress, goals, and habit history all work without any connection. It’s happiest in airplane mode.
What file formats does it support?
EPUB and PDF — two of the most common ebook and document formats. Import through Android’s system file picker, Open With, or Share. Imported books are copied into app storage so moving the original file does not break your library.
Is narration cloud-based or on-device?
On-device. steerStory uses Android’s installed text-to-speech voices. Your book text is not uploaded to a cloud TTS provider for narration, and book text is not used for AI training.
Can I listen while driving or commuting?
Yes. Use background playback, lock-screen and notification controls, Bluetooth headsets, and Android Auto. Phone and car share the same reading checkpoint so you can continue seamlessly.
How do bookmarks and resume work?
Reopening a book restores your saved position. Tap a word to start narration from there or create a bookmark; drag across text for phrase bookmarks. Bookmarks are searchable and grouped by chapter, and narration checkpoints save frequently so you rarely lose your place.
How do the habit features work?
Set flexible goals by words, chapters, or books — daily through yearly — for listening, visual reading, or both. A quiet streak counts consecutive active local-calendar days, and a Progress dashboard shows a goal ring plus a contribution-style habit calendar. Habit tracking is available even without a narration purchase.
How much does steerStory cost?
Download is free. Narration includes a seven-day trial; after that, visual reading, library, and bookmarks remain usable. Pro narration unlocks with a one-time lifetime purchase on Google Play — no monthly narration subscription. The current price is always shown on the Google Play listing.
Which phones does it support?
steerStory is available for Android on Google Play today. An iOS version is on the way — join the waitlist on this page and we’ll email you when it launches. CarPlay is not claimed at this time.
Is my reading data private?
Books remain on your device rather than in a SteerStory cloud library. Detailed habit history is local. Analytics and crash reporting are separate, opt-in consents you can change later. There is no advertising model and no sale of personal data.
